Well, the one thing I have noticed is that everyone I know that has gotten in is some sort of legacy. Either their parents went there in undergrad or grad or they have some tie with vanderbilt with their grandparents or some other family member.

Try to portray yourself as unconventional in some way. Essays are a good place to do this. Our current chancellor wants to give the school a more diverse reputation, so people who break the mold of a typical Vandy student are desirable. However, if you're not interested in being a token freak, all of the usual ploys to get into a good school will work. Grades, test scores, activities, awards, etc. Be thorough in your application.

You basically need to have it all to get in, or to come from a really good private school. I was top ten, had good SATs, AP classes, extracurriculars to infinity, community service, all that stuff. It helps if you have an edge, one thing that you do that is weird and you're really good at that no one else does. Or, if you have parents or grandparents who went here. Its basically the same as other high caliber liberal arts schools. It also helps if you're a female engineer, or soemthing like that.
